What if the system we built to support students was actually the thing getting in their way?

 

That's not a rhetorical question. That's a diagnosis.

For decades, we've organized schools around a tiered model that sorts students — labels them — and then delivers support based on where they land in that sorting. Tier

1. Tier 2. Tier 3. And somewhere along the way, we started treating the tier as the identity. We stopped asking what does this student need right now and started asking which box they belong in.

The Double Helix System of Support is the answer to that. Today I want to walk you through what it is, why it matters, and, critically, what it looks like when you anchor it to the tools now available to us through artificial intelligence and a deep commitment to student agency.

THE FOUNDATION — Building on Strength, Not Deficit

Every great system needs a foundation you can actually stand on. Not a policy. Not a framework on a shelf. A living, breathing set of beliefs that drive every decision adults make on behalf of students.

The Double Helix starts there ~ with a strength-based foundation for ambitious improvement. That phrase gets used a lot, so let me tell you what we actually mean by it.

It means we enter every conversation about a student asking: What is working? What does this student bring? Not what's broken, what's missing, what's behind.

It means high expectations are not reserved for certain students. They are the floor for every learner, in every classroom, with every adult.

It means accountability looks different here. We're not measuring compliance. We're measuring impact. Is what we're doing actually moving students forward? That's the question that anchors everything.

This foundation is non-negotiable because if we don't get this right, nothing else in the system holds.

CLARITY — Redefining What Support Looks Like

Here's where we make our first bold move. We ban the tiers.

Not reform them. Not rename them. Ban them. Because the moment you label a student as a "Tier 3 kid," you've done something to that student that data cannot undo. You've shifted the expectation. You've narrowed the possibility.

What replaces the tiers? Precision. Effective instruction, intervention, and acceleration delivered in real time, inside the classroom, by staff who are comprehensively situated to respond to what students need today.

Think about what that requires of leadership. It requires you to move resources, people, and time toward the classroom — not away from it. It requires a schedule that flexes. It requires adults who are skilled enough to identify what a student needs without waiting for a referral process to catch up.

This is where AI becomes a genuine game-changer.

Imagine a teacher in the middle of a lesson who can pull real-time data on how students are responding — not next week, not after the unit test — right now. AI-powered tools can surface patterns in student work, flag where understanding is breaking down, and suggest differentiated next steps — in the moment, for individual students.

This is not about replacing teacher judgment. It's about giving teachers a faster, sharper lens — so that the intervention reaches the student while it's still timely.

And here's the critical shift in mindset that has to come with this: we identify interventions, not students. The intervention is the variable. The student is not the problem to be fixed.

DESIGN FEATURES — Precision in Practice

Clarity tells us what we believe. Design Features tell us how we operate.

Data is the nervous system of this model. But not data as a report card. Data as a conversation. Data as a compass. Nimble, responsive data that tells us whether what we're doing is working — and gives us permission to adjust before it's too late.

This is the part where I want to talk about student agency — because it doesn't live in isolation. It lives here, inside the design.

When we use data to inform instruction — and we share that data with students — something powerful happens. Students stop being the objects of education and start becoming the architects of it.

Think about what it means for a student to understand their own learning trajectory. To be able to say: I'm strong here. I need more time here. I want to try this. That's not a fantasy. That's what happens when the system is designed to make learning transparent and responsive, rather than opaque and procedural.

AI accelerates this dramatically. Adaptive learning platforms can give students immediate feedback, allow them to set goals, track their own progress, and make choices about how they engage with content. The student is no longer waiting to be told where they stand. They know — and they have tools to act on it.

For leadership, this means your design decisions matter enormously. The platforms you invest in, the professional learning you prioritize, the time structures you build — these are the levers that either enable student agency or squeeze it out.

Ask yourself: Does our current schedule give students any choice in how they access support? Do our tools show students their own data? Do our teachers have time to coach students on their learning, not just deliver content?

If the answer is no, that's not a teacher problem. That's a design problem. And design problems are leadership problems.

SHARED ACCOUNTABILITY — Everyone Owns Every

Student

This is the part where the story gets personal.

Shared accountability is non-negotiable. Those are the words we use. And I want you to feel the weight of them.

Non-negotiable means it's not a meeting norm. It's not a value on a poster. It is the organizing principle of how your teams function. It means that when a student is

struggling, no one gets to say that's not my student. Every student belongs to everyone.

The collaborative team structure is the engine here. Deeply implemented, not surface-level PLCs where people share lesson plans and call it collaboration. Real teams that look at evidence together, make decisions together, and hold each other accountable for outcomes together.

This is where AI can anchor the adult work, too. When teams come together with

AI-synthesized data — patterns surfaced across classrooms, growth trends flagged before they become crises — the conversation shifts. We move from anecdotal to analytical. From reactive to anticipatory.

The interdependencies matter too. The work of supporting students academically cannot be separated from the social dimensions of their learning. A student who doesn't feel seen, safe, or connected cannot access instruction — no matter how precise it is.

Shared accountability means the whole child is everyone's responsibility.

For leadership specifically, your role is to protect the conditions that make this possible. That means protecting team time. It means building adult competency, not assuming it. It means modeling the belief that you are accountable too, not just to test scores, but to the quality of the professional environment you're creating for your staff and your students.

THE DOUBLE HELIX — Two Strands, One System

You may be wondering, why the Double Helix? Why that image?

Because a Helix is not a line. It's not a hierarchy. It's two strands, spiraling together, interdependent — each one giving the other its strength.

The two strands are the adult work and the student work. They move together. When adults get more precise, students get more agency. When students demonstrate more agency, adults get better information. The system feeds itself when it's designed well.

AI is the catalyst that can accelerate that spiral. Not as a shortcut. Not as a replacement for human relationships and professional judgment. But as a tool that helps both strands move faster, with more clarity, toward better outcomes for every student.

Here's what I want to leave you with:

The students in your schools are not waiting for the next framework. They are not waiting for the next grant cycle or the next professional development day. They are in classrooms right now, and the system is either working for them or it isn't.

The Double Helix is a choice. It is a leadership choice — to build something nimble enough to meet students where they are, precise enough to intervene before they fall behind or to close an existing gap, and bold enough to believe that every student deserves access to a high-quality education.

That's not an aspiration. That's an obligation. And it starts with us.
