Radical Doesn’t Mean Reckless

Radical Excellence means ambitious improvement and tireless focus for ensuring every student grows, thrives, and achieves to their fullest potential.

Despite the uncertainty at the Federal level and the desire to return accountability to the states, we must be unwavering in our belief in the power of ambitious education. States will be faced with creating the framework and guardrails for implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Act, and the Civil Rights Act, including Section 504. We cannot go back to the era of exclusion and discrimination based on the perception of ‘who can learn and who cannot’.

We cannot wait! We must be bold ~ be ambitious in our own right. So let’s challenge ourselves to design education that meets our students today, tomorrow, and their future selves. Here, I offer a research-based model ~ an owner’s manual, for ensuring all students can have a quality pathway to their lives.

My work in the field and in my research has resulted in the framework below. It is responsive, nimble, and grounded in strength.

Here are the components of implementing Radically Excellent School Improvement:

  1. Design a comprehensive improvement process that intentionally builds interdependencies across and within the organization.

  2. Clarity and Interdependencies are relentlessly implemented with every decision.

  3. Conduct a Root of the Root Analysis ©for each of the Five Components of the Equity Audit ©.

  4. Establish and deeply implement a strength-based Collaboration Team Structure.

  5. Implement a Coaching Structure at both the leadership and instructional levels.

  6. Keep students at the center by implementing only those effective practices that demonstrate impact.
